A nine-day event, the Nine Emperor Gods Festival is a religious spectacle celebrated by the Chinese Taoists. The festival is dedicated to the nine deities, which are believed to dwell in the stars, descending from heaven to earth.
Different rituals are carried out each day during the festival, including skewering, fire-walking, and hot oil ceremony. On the last day, a procession will take place to send off the Nine Emperor Gods, back to the sea.
As most believers observe a strict vegetarian diet for all nine days, you see an explosion of makeshift food stalls all over Penang, selling only vegetarian food to meet that once-a-year demand.
Vegetarian = mock meat? We have seen the most unimaginable vegetarian dishes being served during the festival.
